In the context of the Corona crisis, will Instagram provide a button for video calls in the direct thread in the future, which you can use to contact followers directly? A test for this is already underway. But not all users are enthusiastic about the option.
More video chats via Instagram?
Due to the Corona crisis, people are increasingly using social media and especially tools for video chats or video conferencing. Facebook has noticed a significant increase in the use of its various services and has already reacted by launching new features for the streaming option Facebook Live or bringing it into beta testing. Another test, but at Instagram, was discovered by reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong. Instagram is currently testing the introduction of a Video Call Button.
So far, a camera icon is found at the position in the direct thread, but there is no option yet to start a video call directly. This could change in the future. However, the comments on Wong’s tweet indicate that not all users would react positively. For example, there is a concern that many video calls could be made inadvertently.
Whether the possible feature could actually offer any particular added value for Instagrammer is currently as doubtful as the introduction of the option. However, Instagram could use it to try to keep users on the platform for longer if they want to use virtual face-to-face communication. If the corona crisis continues for much longer, many users might at least test Instagram’s video call solution if it is rolled out for everyone.
