Cabildo has deactivated the Island Emergency Plan

Cabildo has deactivated the Island Emergency Plan as the Canary Islands Government’s Safety & Emergency Department has announced the lifting of the state of alert due to a wind and rain storm which has been affecting the entire Archipelago since Sunday night [28 November]. A team of over  400 staff plus one hundred vehicles have been mobilised over the past couple of days to tackle the damage caused by the storm.
Roads
Today the access roads to the Teide are open although a section of the TF-21 road is closed inside the limits of the National Park from kilometre 47 at the Parador until km 53 at Bocatauce. In this area heavy duty equipment is required to clear the road. Also still closed to traffic is theTF-65 road from San Miguel to Los Abrigos. The Island Government’s bus service (TITSA) is operating normally with all services now running.
Damage
Firemen from the Consorcio Insular de Bomberos de Tenerife were called out on 304 occasions from 15.00 yesterday to assist with incidents caused by the strong winds which lashed different parts of the island. The fire brigades continue working particularly in the north. The majority of call outs were in the municipalities of La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Realejos, Santa Cruz, La Laguna, Tacoronte, San Miguel, Icod de los Vinos, La Guancha and Granadilla de Abona, where the fire brigade was needed to help remove sunshades, lamp posts, fallen trees, billboards and unsafe road signs which had become unstable due to the high winds and prevent any possible danger to the public or damage.
Power lines hit
The number of people currently without electricity in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife stands at around 4,000, mainly in the north of the Island: Los Realejos (1,400), La Guancha (1,000), and San Juan de la Rambla (650). The technical teams are still experiencing difficulty in accessing the double circuit power line which has been affected as a result of eight pylons being blown down. The time frame for restoring power to homes is still unknown.
Telephones
Telefónica is reporting problems with land lines due to fallen telegraph posts and broken telephone cables. Some 3.83 per cent of mobile phone transmitters are out of service because there are still 13 transmitters which are inoperative.
Some of Vodafone’s services have been affected by the wind at certain telephone link ups but the number of users who are unable to use their phones is unknown mainly between Los Realejos and Buenavista.
Agriculture
In the farming sector, the area hardest hit has been the Orotava Valley to Isla Baja, with major damage to banana plantations, citrus fruit trees and avocado trees. The structures of greenhouses in the Abona region have been damaged. At the moment, technicians from the Island Corporation are carrying out evaluations and the results will be announced in the next few days.

Cabildo activates Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) due to gale force winds and heavy rain

The Cabildo de Tenerife (Tenerife Island Government) activated the Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) yesterday at 17.00 acting on the forecast by the Spanish Met Office (Agencia Estatal de Meteorología – Aemet) of very high winds, thunder storms and heavy rain in compliance with the state of alert decreed by the Gobierno de Canarias.

Gale force winds predicted

The storm began to affect the island of Tenerife last night [Sunday 28] and will cause disruption all day today [Monday 29]. Yesterday afternoon the island’s chiefs for Civil Protection, Roads, Mobility and Safety, Water, Environment, Sports, Heritage and Tourism convened the Crisis Cabinet headed by the President of the Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior. Throughout this morning, the Cabildo has been informing the managers of the main public services on the island so that they can take the necessary precautionary steps given the very high risk announced by the Met Office of high winds with gusts of up to 130 km/hour on the entire island, which could reach 170 km/hour in the mountains.

Given the emergency situation, the Cabildo’s Department for Roads closed all access roads to the Teide yesterday. The following roads are closed until further notice: TF-21 La Orotava, TF-24 La Esperanza, TF-523 Arafo and TF-38 Guía de Isora.

The Cabildo has issued a general warning to the public to avoid whenever possible travelling in the lower hills and mountain areas of the island where there could be extreme gale force winds. The Cabildo advises the population to monitor the local media during the day for updates on this weather hazard.

Roll Up For Rock Story, A Classic Musical Journey

Abba, Pink Floyd and Queen were all about much more than the music, they gave flamboyant performances and that’s what Rock Story captures in a three hour explosion of sound and vision. The three tributes at Exit Palace in San Eugenio are packed with versatile singers, musicians, dancers and even acrobats.

Abba lead the way getting the seated audience tapping their feet and clapping, Agnetha and Anni-Frid launch into Mamma Mia from their balcony perches above each side of the stage but soon descend to join the four piece backing group as they lead the audience willingly through a cascade of hits. The costumes are as bright and colourful as their delivery and several quick changes allow them to dazzle without letting up the pace.

Tackling Pink Floyd is a big challenge but a spectacular stage set, constructed during a 15 minute break, helps to convey the power and emotion of big hitters like Wish You Were Here and Shine On You Crazy Diamonds. The visual impact is provided by a video screen, lasers and acrobatic dancers suspended from the ceiling in netting. The set, just over 40 minutes like the other tributes, ends with a dramatic re-enactment of Another Brick In The Wall with the barrier of the title brought crashing down amid a guitar crescendo.

The wall debris was cleared during the second break, a chance to visit the bar for sensibly priced drinks, 3 euros a pint, 2.50 euros a wine, and back in time to see Freddie Mercury roar down the aisle and up onto the stage on his motorbike to start the Queen tribute. It’s A Kinda Magic and another whirl of rocking hits came one after the other with the soaring Brian May guitar sound and a strutting delivery from frontman Freddie. Radio Ga Ga, and Bohemian Rhapsody mingled with the emotion packed Who Wants To Live Forever and a cracking Barcelona duet with a very impressive Monserat Caballe sound alike.

The three hours pass too quickly but end in a loud appreciation of a wonderful nights entertainment evoking memories of some of the finest songs of the last 30 years. Shows are every Tuesday and Saturday from 9.30 pm with tickets starting at 25 euros including a glass of cava or soft drink to welcome you. Bookings can be made via the website or at hotel receptions and excursion shops.

Hey Teacher Don’t Leave Those Kids Alone

Chaining their school closed was just another lesson in the harsh realities of life for pupils at CEIP Aponte School in Alcala, Guia de Isora today. The drastic action came after the parents association AMPA decided that they were fed up with excuses for the lack of a replacement teacher for a hospitalised colleague, missing for 5 weeks.

Some 28 pupils at the Centro de Ensenanza de Infantil & Primaria centre have been deprived of their lessons despite the law setting a 15 day limit to be left without tuition. Hellen Le Fevre has been at the forefront of the fight frustrated at the lack of action to give her children the education they need. The protesters went up to Santa Cruz last wek to complain at the Ministry of Education but only got vague assurances that they would look into the matter.

The show of solidarity certainly drew plenty of attention with local newspapers and television crews highlighting the ongoing problem, as police and Guardia Civil kept a watch on the large crowd. Guia de Isora council have said there is no money for a replacement teacher but the parents and pupils want them to do their sums again. We await a happy outcome.
