The President of the Tenerife Island Authority (Cabildo), Ricardo Melchior, and Spain’s Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal, Abas Ndiour, have met to discuss a number of common issues linking both Senegal and Tenerife.

First on the agenda was an update on the staging of the II Salón de la Cooperación or II International Development Cooperation Conference, a very important event which will bring together this year in Dakar the heads of African nations. During the meeting with the President, the Ambassador was accompanied by Thiombane Gorgui Wad who is the Technical Director for Africa for the II International Development Cooperation Conference.

After the meeting the President of the Cabildo announced the launch of  new direct flight Tenerife-Senegal before the start of the II Salón de la Cooperación which is scheduled to take place at the end of April 2009.

This international gathering aims to contribute toward the UN Millennium goals for the eradication of poverty and boosting development aid. Its key mission is to bring together the major players in the field of International Development Cooperation.

During the meeting Ambassador Wad asked the President of the Cabildo to organise a meeting with the Senegal Women’s Association and he highlighted the fact that in Tenerife there are around 3,000 Senegalese residents and overall some 10,000 Senegalese are living in the Canary Islands.

The International Development Cooperation Conference, a major event promoted by the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, will be staged in Dakar from 27-29 Abril 2009.
